Richard Manuel was best known as one of the principal members of The Band, a group formed in 1965 from Ronnie Hawkins' back up band, The Hawks. Manuel shared songwriting and singing duties and played several instruments, including piano and drums. His suicide in 1986 ended a comeback tour for The Band and ended an era in rock history.
